Biographical Sketch
Stephen A. Moser, Ph.D. is Professor of Pathology in the Division of Laboratory Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He serves as Section Head for the Clinical Microbiology Laboratory at University of Alabama Hospital. Dr. Moser has a special interest in fungal diseases and has established the University of Alabama Health Services Foundation Fungal Reference Laboratory and serves as Director. He has been in academic positions first at Tulane School of Medicine Department of Microbiology (4 years) followed by Washington University Department of Pathology (10 years) and now at UAB since 1992.

Research/Clinical Interest
Pulmonary mycotic infections, Antifungal Susceptibility, Diagnosis of Invasive Fungal Infections.
Clinical Microbiology: Due to the nature of clinical microbiology, the areas of Dr. Moser's investigation and publication are diverse. Most studies have involved the assessment of methods for providing more rapid or accurate diagnostic test results to physicians. Many have involved pathology residents and serve an important educational role by teaching research methods and exposing them to presenting at national scientific meetings. The areas covered include mycology, bacteriology, mycobacteriology, and antimicrobial susceptibility testing. Current active research addresses the early diagnosis of invasive fungal infections in hematopoetic stem cell transplant recipients using real-time PCR; molecular epidemiology of Streptococcus mutans.
