Biographical Sketch
I am one of a handful of trained clinicians with a formal background in Computer Science. As such, I combine a medical pedigree with deep ability and experience in the field of information technology. I am comfortable both in architecting technical systems as well as in applying my diagnostic pathology abilities. I have published award-winning research abstracts at national research meetings, have written articles which are helping to define the field of pathology informatics, and am a contributing author to several textbooks in said field. I serve on the editorial board of the Journal of Pathology Informatics, tasked primarily with reviewing technically complex articles on the bleeding edge of clinical informatics. I was elected chief resident of my residency program (University of Illinois Medical Center of Chicago, Anatomic and Clinical Pathology), during which I not only served in an administrative and leadership capacity, but also developed UIC’s first-ever didactic curriculum in informatics. I have served in a clinical governance role for major electronic medical record enhancement projects at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Most recently, I have been hired as the first true clinical informatics faculty member of the Department of Pathology at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. In this role, I serve as a bridge between clinicians, researchers, and IT, promoting true system interoperability and “big data” approaches to clinical analytics in all my projects and interactions.

Research/Clinical Interest
Big Data and Cloud Computing in Clinical Workflow
I am interested in the pervasive use of informatics as a workflow organization and improvement tool. Specific interests in this arena include advanced imaging techniques, whole slide imaging, user interface design in the electronic medical record, and the utilization of Web 2.0 technologies in medical practice and education.
