Biographical Sketch
Dr. Everts is an Associate Professor in the School of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, Division of Infectious Disease. She received a M.Sc. in Pharmaceutical Sciences from the University of Groningen and a Ph.D. in Pharmacokinetics and Drug Delivery from the Groningen University Institute for Drug Exploration (GUIDE), the Netherlands, with a thesis entitled 'Selective delivery of dexamethasone to inflamed endothelium via E-selectin', under mentorship of Drs. G. Molema, D.K.F. Meijer and L.F.M.H. de Leij. She then moved on to do her postdoctoral training under supervision of Dr. David T. Curiel in the Division of Human Gene Therapy, UAB, to pursue her research interest in targeted gene delivery for the treatment of cancer. She joined the faculty of the Department of Pathology at UAB in August 2005 as an Instructor, and continued her research on targeted therapies using gene therapy and nanotechnology approaches. In June of 2009, she transitioned to the role of Associate Director of the Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance, which is a collaboration between UAB and Southern Research. She also provides IND application assistance to physician-investigators on campus, and provides Quality Assurance for the UAB Vector Production Facility, which manufactures novel biological drugs for Phase I clinical trials.

Research/Clinical Interest
Drug Discovery
Dr. Everts is the Associate Director of the Alabama Drug Discovery Alliance; in that capacity she interfaces with a wide range of scientists involved in the drug discovery and development process, with a focus on projects in oncology, infectious diseases and neurodegenerative disorders. She also Administrative Director of Core A of a U19-funded NIAID Center for Experimental Therapeutics, entitled 'Antiviral Drug Discovery and Development Center', or 'AD3C'. Finally, she aids investigators on campus with Investigational New Drug applications to the FDA, and provides Quality Assurance for the UAB Vector Production Facility.
