Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Suswam was born in Benue State of Nigeria. She attended Ahmadu Bello University Zaria, where she obtained her Doctor of Veterinary Medincine (DVM) and Master of Science (MS) degrees. She obtained her PhD degree at the University of Edinburgh, Edinburgh, Scotland, United Kingdom (UK). Immediately after she came to the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) where she pursued extensive postdoctoral training in molecular biology and cancer research. Dr. Suswam was appointed Assistant Professor in the Department of Neurology for six years prior to joining department of Pathology.

Title
Posttranscriptional gene regulation in colorectal and brain cancers
Description
Dr. Suswam's extramurally funded research focuses on discovery of molecular targets and identification of biomarkers for cancer progression, diagnosis and/or prognosis. Current efforts are defining molecular and genetic factors underlying colorectal cancer aggressiveness and poor outcomes, and the implications for racial/ethnic disparities. Her second line of research investigates effects of PAD-mediated protein deimination on cancer progression and invasion. The knowledge gained from these studies is useful for the design of interventions that reduce cancer burden and/or health disparities of these cancers.
