Research/Clinical Interest
Connections Between Atherosclerosis, Diabetes, and Alzheimer's Disease
Our research interest is focused on the genetic and pathophysiological connections between atherosclerosis, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease (AD) using transgenic/knockout mouse models. We employ a combination of molecular, cellular, electrophysiological, and behavioral approaches in our research. Current research activities in our laboratory include: 1) Investigation on the protective mechanisms of cholesterol-lowering drug (statins) in AD and other age-related dementia; 2) Pathogenic and therapeutic connections between insulin resistance, diabetes, and AD; 3) Role of dietary and/or genetically induced hypercholesterolemia in the development of AD-like neuropathology and behavior in transgenic mouse models of AD; 4) Role of amyloid-beta peptide in atherogenesis; and 5) Structure and function of apolipoprotein A-I, a major protein component of the cardio-protective high-density lipoproteins.
