Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Sumant Singh Chugh is Principal Investigator of the Glomerular Disease Therapeutics Laboratory, and Associate Program Director for Research in the Division of Nephrology. He is widely credited for having described the molecular basis of human Minimal Change Disease, a form of nephrotic syndrome most commonly seen in children. Dr. Chugh graduated from Christian Medical College Ludhiana, India, and completed Internal Medicine residencies at the Postgraduate Institute Chandigarh, India, and Newton Wellesley Hospital, Newton MA. He completed his Nephrology Fellowship from Boston University, and joined as Assistant Professor of Medicine at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in September 2000. In September 2007, he joined UAB as Associate Professor of Medicine. Dr. Chugh was promoted to Professor of Medicine in 2011, and was elected to the American Society of Clinical Investigation in 2012. He was unanimously selected to receive the Max Cooper Award for Excellence in Research in 2012, and is a prior recipient of the ASN Carl W. Gottschalk Research Scholar Award (2002), the NKF Young Investigator Grant Award (2004) and the Faculty Recognition Award (2004). Dr. Chugh has been a NIH funded investigator since 2001.

Mechanism based treatment of nephrotic syndrome
Over the past decade, our laboratory has focused on investigating mechanisms of proteinuria, with the intent of developing mechanism based therapy. Some of the projects include identifying a molecular basis for slit diaphragm permeability (JCI 2003), identification and characterization of the role of ZHX transcriptional factors in podocyte gene expression (JBC 2006), identification of glucocorticoid-sensitive genes in the podocyte (KI 2007), dissecting changes in podocyte gene expression during the development of glomerular capillary loop collapse (KI 2007), identification of podocyte secreted Angiopoietin-like 4 (Angptl4) as a major molecular player in human and experimental Minimal Change Disease (Nature Medicine 2010), and establishment of circulating Angptl4 as the molecular link between proteinuria and hypertriglyceridemia in nephrotic syndrome (Nature Medicine 2013). Current therapeutic strategies under development are based on the manipulation of podocyte expression of ZHX transcriptional factors, improving sialylation of podocyte secreted hyposialylated Angptl4 to reduce proteinuria in MCD and diabetic nephropathy, and using mutant forms of human Angptl4 to treat proteinuria and nephrotic syndrome. We are also actively involved in determining factors in the circulation that modulate human glomerular disease. Instead of looking for individual circulating factors, we are engaged in indentifying a circulating glomerulophilic proteome (CGP) using a multidimensional approach.
