Biographical Sketch
Dr. Mannon received her medical degree from Duke University Medical School in Durham, North Carolina. She completed her internship and residency in Internal Medicine, and Nephrology fellowship as well as serving as Chief Resident in the Department of Medicine, also at Duke. After several years on Duke Nephrology faculty as an NIH-funded investigator in transplant immunology at the rank of Assistant Professor and Director of Transplantation at the Durham VA Medical Center, she joined the Transplantation Branch of NIDDK at the National Institutes of Health Clinical Center, an intramural, translational research program in transplantation immunology. As Medical Director of Transplantation for the program that performed all kidney and kidney/pancreas transplants all under protocol defined care, Dr. Mannon provided clinical and protocol support as well as maintained an active laboratory effort. She also served on the faculty of Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences in Bethesda as Associate Professor and later Professor of Medicine. Dr. Mannon is board certified in Internal Medicine and Nephrology. She joined the UAB faculty in 2008. She is also Medical Director of the Birmingham VA Kidney Transplant Program.

Research/Clinical Interest
Translational Approaches to the Pathogenesis and Treatment of Chronic Graft Injury
Despite dramatic improvements in acute rejection rates and short term graft survival, long term graft loss remains a significant problem after kidney transplantation. The leading cause of late graft loss is due to interstitial fibrosis (IF) and tubular atrophy (TA), an entity previously called chronic allograft nephropathy (CAN). IF/TA can occur months to years after transplantation, and is manifested by a progressive decline in graft function, protein in the urine, and hypertension. The etiology of this disorder is multifactorial and includes both immunologic and non-immunologic etiologies. Moreover, there are no specific therapies for IF/TA beyond controlling blood pressure and cholesterol levels, similar to other forms of kidney failure. Our research program utilizes a series of rodent models of kidney and heart transplantation and calcineurin inhibitor toxicity to study the cellular, molecular, and physiologic events following transplantation. By manipulating the donor and recipient combinations, we have found that recipient and donor matching can alter graft the course of IF/TA. Utilizing these models, we have analyzed for gene and protein expression in diseased kidneys. We have used these models as platforms for translation into our human patients following kidney transplantation. Our long term goal is to identify new mechanisms and associated biomarkers in the detection and treatment of IF/TA.
