Title:
Transmission dynamics in asymptomatic SARS-CoV2 infected children
Decription:
The purpose of the study is to identify how many children are infected
with SARS-CoV-2 (the virus that causes COVID-19 illness) that are not experiencing any symptoms and who may spread the virus to members of the household or community. In addition, we will measure the amount of virus in respiratory tract to determine if it increases likelihood of spreading. If you are interested and would like to know more, please email me.

Title:
The role of endothelin-1 in renal iron handling in sickle cell disease.
Decription:
Sickle cell disease (SCD) is associated with high risk of morbidity and mortality from kidney damage. Iron overload, a major consequence of SCD, promotes renal iron deposition that correlates with albuminuria in pediatric SCD patients. Elevated plasma endothelin-1 (ET-1) levels correlate with renal iron content in pediatrics and murine SCD. Therefore, the overall goal of the study is to elucidate the ET-1/ ETA-dependent mechanisms of renal iron trafficking in SCD.

End-of-Life Care for Children with Complex Chronic Conditiosn
Decription:
My career has been defined by a commitment to health disparities research and now focuses on disparities in end-of-life care to ensure every US child dying of cancer has access to high-quality end-of-life care. In particular, my long-term goal is to establish end-of-life quality measures for children with cancer and leverage the measures to reduce disparities in end-of-life care. That work requires interviews and surveys with bereaved families about the perception of EOL care and population level work to examine disparities in care. Therefore, there are both qualitative and quantitative research opportunities.

Research Opportunity Details
Title:
Yeast phenomic models of human disease
Decription:
Yeast phenomics refers to phenotypic analysis of the genomic collection of 6000 yeast gene knockout and knockdown strains. We have developed custom methodologies to quantify growth phenotypes at higher throughput and resolution than possible with commercially available technology. This platform is applied to model the genetic basis for wide variety of biologic questions of high relevance to human disease that are relatively intractable using other approaches for genetic analysis. Examples include phenomic analysis of cellular quiescence or chemotherapy response, as well as global assessment of genetic modifiers of mendelian diseases such as cystic fibrosis, where yeast affords homologs of human genes for genome-wide analysis. In general, the laboratory aims to leverage powerful tools for genetic analysis that are unique to the yeast model system, so that new knowledge can be generated to formulate groundbreaking hypotheses testable in a more targeted manner in other genetic models, where the throughput and resolution for analyses do not as easily accommodate systematic and unbiased studies. The laboratory aims to provide opportunities for highly committed students at all levels, who are interested in genotype-phenotype analysis.

Alcohol Use and Suicide Research Study
Decription:
Project Description: This study will test the effects of alcohol and mood on attentional bias towards suicide. Participants will be randomly assigned to one of four groups and will either be administered alcohol or a placebo beverage. After this is complete, the participant's mood will be influenced positively or negatively, and they will complete an attention task. The results of this study will help the research team conduct further research about alcohol's role in suicide risk.
Overview of Student Responsibilities: Answering and returning phone calls from individuals interested in participating Screening participants for eligibility based on study criteria. Running study appointments with lab staff (helping to administer study measures, etc.). Monitoring participants in the alcohol condition as they detox from the study-administered dosage. Student RAs have the potential to be involved with further parts of the research process, including the analysis of the results and future directions if demonstrated excellent contribution to study procedures. This is an opportunity to be involved in novel research in suicide risk and alcohol use, and is a great resumé builder for students who may be interested in learning more about the process of research or are interested in a research career. Title:
Research in Aging through Mentorship and Practice - Undergraduate Program (RAMP-UP) – 2022
Decription:
The UAB Minority Health and Health Disparities Research (UAB MHRC) invites rising sophomore undergraduate students to participate in its two-year intensive eight-week Research in Aging through Mentorship and Practice Undergraduate Program (RAMP-UP), which takes place in June and July, with additional virtual learning opportunities during the academic year.
Eligible Applicants: We are accepting applications for these paid internships from undergraduate students currently entering their sophomore year of their undergraduate degree program at: • University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) • Tuskegee (TU) • Alabama A&M University (AAMU) • Alabama State University (ASU) • Oakwood University (OU) • Stillman College (SC) RAMP-UP provides activities focused on mentored research experiences and education in research regarding senior adults, and aging and health disparities research for underrepresented students in MSTEM fields. RAMP-UP combines the research experience with structured career planning and guidance from an advocate, coach, and mentor, to increase the likelihood that students will complete graduate studies and enter the research workforce after completing their degrees. RAMP-UP summer program dates are June 6 – July 29, 2022. We encourage qualified undergraduate students of all majors to apply. All students are required to submit: • Personal Statement including the following: - Why would you like to participate in the RAMP-UP Program? - How will participation impact your academic and career goals? - What qualifications set you apart from other applicants? • Unofficial transcripts • Current resume • Two letters of recommendation sent by the recommender to rampup@uabmc.edu Application and materials must be submitted by Friday, April 15, 2022. Idiopathic Subglottic Stenosis and Ciliary Function
Decription:
Upper airway stenosis is a life-threatening entity, but can be successfully managed with laser treatment and dilation. A specific group of patients with airway stenosis (idiopathic subglottic stenosis), develop problems with mucus retention in the airway and cough. It is believed this is due to cilia dysfunction in the mucosa, but this has not been investigated. We will be looking at tissue samples to determine the function of the cilia in these patients
