Biographical Sketch
Pankaj Arora, MD, FAHA, completed his MD at Manipal University in India. He received his postdoctoral training in complex-trait genetics at Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School and the Broad Institute of MIT and Harvard. He subsequently completed his clinical cardiology fellowship training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Currently, Dr. Arora is an assistant professor in the division of cardiology at UAB. In addition, Dr. Arora is a past chair of the Early Career Committee of Functional Genomics and Translational Biology Council at the American Heart Association and is a member of the leadership committee. Dr. Arora’s current efforts are focused on studying genetic basis of natriuretic peptide levels in population cohorts. Arora’s laboratory is actively working with HudsonAlpha faculty investigator Devin Absher, PhD, on dissecting the molecular mechanisms behind racial differences in natriuretic peptide levels. Dr. Arora’s long-term goal is primarily to translate genetic discoveries into an improved understanding of human physiology through clinically-focused research.

Research/Clinical Interest
Racial differences in Natriuretic Peptide response to glucose challenge
After medicine residency, I joined the Framingham Heart Study for formal research training in complex trait genetics and genomics to conduct genetic association analyses. The efforts resulted in co-author publication of manuscripts from the consortium in Nature and Nature genetics. Over the course of research training, I identified a novel regulatory pathway for ANP expression involving a microRNA. The first-authored manuscript based on this work was published in The Journal of Clinical Investigation. I was selected as one of the finalists for the FGTB Young Investigator Award for the 2012 AHA meeting. In a separate first-authored manuscript published in the Journal of American Heart Association, I was able to demonstrate that natriuretic peptides are increased significantly with weight loss in obese individuals. My current research revolves around a central hypothesis that a deficiency in natriuretic peptide signaling promotes cardiometabolic disease, which represents a therapeutic target. In 2015, I was selected as one of the finalists for the ACC Molecular & Cellular cardiology, Young Investigator Award. In this effort, we were able to elucidate the influence of acute carbohydrate challenge on the ANP levels with no effect on BNP levels in whites. The first-authored manuscript for this work was published in the Journal of American College of Cardiology. As a direct extension of and natural complement to these prior and ongoing investigations, one of the studies in our research program will focus on identifying hypertensive subgroups in which the blood pressure elevation and increased salt-sensitivity is related to the association of ANP genetic variant rs5068.
