Dr. Boogaerts received his BS from the University of New Orleans (Biology/Chemistry, 1976). After finishing a Ph.D. in Physiology at LSUMC in New Orleans (researching modifiers of intrahepatic assembly of VLDL and lipid/apolipoprotein synthesis and secretion), Dr. Boogaerts completed his M.D. training. Following that, in 1984, he and his family moved to Birmingham, where he pursued an internal medicine residency and then cardiology fellowship at UAB.
During the third year of his UAB residency, Dr. Boogaerts began work in the UAB Department of Biochemistry/ Molecular Genetics, studying the primary apolipoprotein of HDL. Using cDNA for human apo-A1 and techniques of molecular engineering, the lab produced a number of specifically modified versions of apo-A1 using site-directed mutagenesis, whereby portions of cDNA inserted into a plasmid may be selectively altered. This allowed the UAB research team to study how apo-A1 interacts with lipids on the surface of the HDL particle. During his UAB cardiology fellowship, he continued this research, contributing to an understanding of the structural basis of apo-A1 function.
After fellowship, Dr. Boogaerts took a position as a cardiologist at Ochsner Heart and Vascular Institute in Baton Rouge, with a joint appointment at the LSU Pennington Biomedical Research Center, where he continued his apo-A1 research.
Dr. Boogaerts is a member of the Alabama Chapter of the American College of Cardiology, the Medical Association of the State of Alabama, and the Jefferson County Medical Society and has received numerous awards and honors including Postdoctoral Research Fellow, Cardiovascular Training Grant, NIH National Research Service Award (1977-1979), AOA (1982), Hull-Akenhead Cardiology Award, LSU School of Medicine (1984), and Cardiovascular Research Training Center Award, UAB (1988). He has over 33 years of experience in cardiology and internal medicine.
