Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Takamitsu Saigusa MD is a physician scientist, Associate Professor in the Division of Nephrology at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). He received his MD degree in Japan and completed Medicine and Nephrology training in both Japan and the US. After his Nephrology Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, he moved to UAB and he is currently funded by the National Institute of Health. He is a staff physician at the Birmingham VA Medical Center.

Research/Clinical Interest
Title
The role of wheat-gluten in PKD
Description
His area of research is to study how dietary protein that leads to renal hypertrophy, affects the immune response, inflammation and accelerates cyst growth in polycystic kidney disease, which includes how plant based diet affects cyst growth. His clinical interests includes polycystic kidney disease, tuberous sclerosis complex, chronic kidney disease and hypertension. He sees patients at the UAB Gardendale clinic for general Nephrology and the Kirklin clinic for polycystic kidney disease and Tuberous sclerosis patients.
