Course Description
This special topics course provides medical students with exposure to existing community health resources and service organizations in Central Alabama. It will focus on skill building as it relates to preforming sexual health interviews and gaining exposure to the provision of sexual health promotion services to gener and sexually diverse individuals. It will introduce infections that are transmitted sexually, their prevention, and their treatment. Students participate in didactic and small group sessions as well as visit service organizations. The course directors will provide direct oversight and individualized feedback to learners during each activity. This course is being offered in conjunction and collaboration with the Deep South Academic Scholars in Health (DASH) Program (director, Sarah MacCarthy). DASH is a dynamic training initiative designed to accelerate the development of scholars committed to improving population health in the Deep South. Students participating in this special topics course will attend service organizations along with DAHS participants. Such interdisciplinary networking opprotunities with learners outside of the Heersink School of Medicine provide additional benefits to students participating in this course.
