Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Powers is a geriatric psychiatrist and a neuropathologist. He was trained in pathology at the University of Kentucky as well as psychiatry and neuropathology at the Johns Hopkins Hospital. He is board certified in general psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry and general pathology. Dr. Powers is currently the Medical Director for the Alabama Department of Mental Health and Mental Retardation.

Description
Neuropathology of Alzheimer's Disease: Dr. Powers participates in clinical and pathological research in the Alzheimer's Center and the Alzheimer's Program Project at UAB. He performs neuropathological assessments of brains from patients in the UAB Alzheimer's Disease Research Center study group. His area of expertise is the pathological alterations of lateral temporal lobe structures such as the supratemporal plane. Neuropathology of Schizophrenia: Dr. Powers performs neuropathological assessments on brains of patients with schizophrenia. His area of expertise is in the chemical anatomy and cytoarchitectonic abnormalities of the supratemporal plane. Dr. Powers is actively involved in teaching the pathological correlates of psychiatric disorders. He provides brain cutting experience and microscopic teaching to pathology and neurology residents at UAB. Health Policy: Dr. Powers is involved in the assesment of public health interventions such as health care work force education or screening for dementia.
