Biographical Sketch 
Dr Patel graduated from the University of Essex, UK, where he also obtained his Ph.D in 1996. He then joined the Department of Pathology, University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) as a post-doctoral fellow, where he is currently Professor and director of the HHHMI Med to Grad program and Department of Pathology Graduate program. Dr Patel’s research centers on understanding the mechanisms that regulate acute and chronic inflammation with a goal of using these insights to develop and test therapeutics targeted to prevent or limit inflammatory injury. Current areas of research include i) investigating how heme proteins interface with reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (including nitric oxide and nitrite) to modulate transfusion toxicity, acute lung injury and ischemia reperfusion injury and ii) understanding how post-translational regulation of protein by N-glycans regulate endothelial cell reactivity and monocyte adhesion in the context of atherosclerosis.

Modulation of Inflammation by Reactive Species and N-glycans
Inflammation is recognized as a key component in the development of both acute and chronic diseases affecting all organ systems. Reactive species (also referred to as free radicals or reactive oxygen, nitrogen or chlorine species) have been identified as important mediators in inflammation with roles in both initiating and preventing disease. We are interested in understanding what regulates the reactivity and function of reactive species and pursue this aim in the following contexts 1) interactions of nitric oxide and nitrite with red blood cells during normal physiological conditions, during red cell storage and inflammation associated with Sepsis, ischemia-reperfusion and transfusion –related injury. Specifically, we are pursuing the idea that hemoglobin regulates blood flow and acts as a switch that controls the anti- and pro-inflammatory effects of nitric oxide 2) evaluating mechanisms by which inhaled toxicants (specifically Chlorine gas) impairs endogenous nitric oxide signaling and developing nitric oxide based therapeutic strategies to limit chlorine gas induced pulmonary toxicity, 3) anti-inflammatory effects of dietary antioxidants. Specifically, consumption of isoflavones is associated with decreased incidence of the chronic inflammatory disease, atherosclerosis. We are investigating the mechanisms of these effects and focusing on how synergistic interactions between components in the diet, and physical forces associated with blood flow modulate endothelial surface N-glycans which in turn control monocyte adhesion during inflammation, 4) Finally, we are translating insights gained from these studies into the clinic by evaluating NO-based therapeutics in inflammatory diseases and specifically organ transplantation.
