Biographical Sketch 
Dr. John R. Porterfield joined the UAB Department of Surgery in 2008, coming to us from the Mayo Clinic. He has since achieved Associate Professorship and additionally serves as our General Surgeyr Residency Program Director. A skilled instructor, with a gift for teaching, he has won numerous awards including UAB Faculty Teacher of the Year Award, UAB Department of Surgery from 2009-2011. He is a dedicated mentor to a group of UAB student researchers. Dr. Porterfield is a member of numerous professional organizations including the Association of Program Directors in Surgery where he is currently serving as a board member. Dr. Porterfield speaks nationally and internationally. He has authored 5 book chapters and contributed to 21 journal articles. His major research interest focuses on the refinement of clinical and biochemical diagnosis, imaging and treatment of disorders of the pancreas, adrenal, thyroid, and parathyroid glands. He also has an education research interest focus, studying the changing paradigms in teaching resident surgeons in the era of advanced minimally invasive surgery, limited work hours and future technique and procedure credentialing.
