Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Marshall received her medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, in 1999. Subsequently, she completed internship and residency training in Internal Medicine at Baylor College of Medicine Affiliated Hospitals in 2002. Thereafter, at the University of Washington School of Medicine in Seattle, Washington, she completed a clinical and research fellowship in Nephrology. In 2006, Dr. Marshall joined the Division of Nephrology faculty at the University of Washington Medical Center (UWMC) as Acting Instructor. Since 2011, Dr. Marshall has been a physician-scientist in the UAB Department of Medicine, Division of Nephrology.

Biology of glomerular visceral epithelial cells (podocytes) in health and disease
The role of podocyte injury in the initiation and progression of glomerulosclerosis. The role of cell cycle regulatory proteins in podocyte response to injury, with a particular focus on DNA damage and apoptosis. The transdifferentiation of podocytes into a dysregulated phenotype in response to stress, adopting a smooth muscle cell-like phenotype. The role of podocyte injury in the pathogenesis of early diabetic nephropathy.
