Course Description
Students enrolled in this 5-day special topics course will build their didactic knowledge, clinical knowledge, and mentorship skills via a hands-on service learning experience at the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center. Students will teach 4th - 6th grade children at the YMCA about various medical topics and guide them through a corresponding interactive activity to actualize concepts. The activities are designed to both build foundational knowledge (history, anatomy, cell biology, etc.) and clinical skills (point-of-care, ultrasound, microscope use, and clinical exam practice). Students will gain skills in scientific communication and explaining medical and science topics at age appropriate levels. There will be a brief orientation located at UAB on Monday morning with the guidance of the Course Director. Students will be briefed on the week's curriculum and activities and receive instruction on the operation of the clinical tools used in the activities. After the orientation, the rest of the course will take place at the Birmingham YMCA Youth Center, where medical students will guide 4th - 6th graders through the outlined lessons and activities. Medical students will have access to short videos that explain the week's activities and should review them before the day the activity takes place.
