Course Description
This four-week elective provides senior medical students (MS4) with immersive, hands-on experience in the outpatient evaluation and treatment of children and adolescents with psychiatric and developmental disorders. Students will work directly with attending physicians, CAP fellows, residents, and multidisciplinary team members to gain exposure to common conditions seen in academic child psychiatry settings, including ADHD, anxiety disorders, depressive disorders, autism spectrum disorders, trauma-related disorders, and emerging mood or behavioral concerns. The elective emphasizes skill development in interviewing children, adolescents, and their families; conducting developmentally informed psychiatric assessments; formulating biopsychosocial case conceptualizations; and participating in treatment planning. Students will also gain understanding of psychopharmacologic management, evidence-based psychotherapies, coordination of care with schools and community agencies, and the family-centered approach that is essential to child mental health care. By the end of the rotation, students should be able to perform age-appropriate psychiatric evaluations, present concise assessments and plans, and demonstrate a foundational understanding of outpatient child psychiatry practice.
