Course Description
The advancements of science, engineering, and medicine continue to revolutionize healthcare. Entrepreneurship in medicine focuses on the process of commercially translating these technological advances to improve healthcare service and the quality of life. This course will provide a brief overview of the global biotechnology and pharmaceutical industry and discuss various topics related to the formation of a start-up company including entrepreneurship, idea development, intellectual property protection, business planning, financing, management and marketing, FDA regulation, and company exits. Towards the end of this course, small groups of students will work collaboratively to develop a commercialization plan for an NIH Small Business Innovation Research (SBIR) grant submission. Ultimately, this course provide a concise overview of entrepreneurship in medicine. Learning Objectives: Medical school students have an opportunity to learn about a career in entrepreneurship and virtually develop own translational research idea into start-up company. By the end of this course, you will be able to: 1) Understand fundamental concepts of entrepreneurship; 2) Learn how to develop a translational research idea into a business plan and own virtual start-up company; 3) Evaluate and analyze NIH SBIR proposals; and 4) Improve your oral and written communication skills. Co-enrolled elective courses offer 2 weeks elective credit each; a student may only receive a maximum of 4 weeks elective credit from co-enrolled courses. STUDENTS ARE ALLOWED TO BE ENROLLED IN ONLY ONE CO-ENROLLED COURSE AT A TIME.

Requirements
In order to achieve these objectives, this course will use a combination of lectures, readings, invited speakers, case studies, group projects for virtual start-up and NIH SBIR proposal evaluation and writing. The final grade will be a Pass/Fail grade, and will be based on attendance, participation, and oral and written analysis of NIH SBIR proposal.
