Course Description This course is designed to expose students to the the scope of care provided to critically ill children. There will be ample opportunity to think through physiologic principles, learn about modalities of care for critically ill children, and participate in discussion about care plans with patient families/guardians. Students will work alongside second year residents to care for children ranging in age from infants to teenagers. Students should gain experience assessing and managing pediatric patients with a variety of conditions including shock, respiratory failure, and severe neurologic injury. Students will care for assigned patients during the month with assistance of the resident team. Students are expected to read independently, attend resident noon conference, and engage in scheduled PICU teaching sessions.
Where To Report On the first day of the rotation students should report to the PICU (7th Floor, Quarterback Tower, Benjamin Russell Building) at 7:45 am or following Pediatric AI orientation if scheduled on the same day.
Requirements Students are expected to follow patients daily with a resident "back up." Students' schedules largely mirror residents' schedule. Students will work "days," typically 6 am until 4:30 pm, for the majority of the rotation. Students will participate in night float for a six day period during the rotation (4:30 pm - 6:30 am). The dates of the night float stretch will be determined based on student preference and residents' schedules. Students will have four full days off during the month.
Evaluation Students will be evaluated by all supervising fellows and attendings. They will be given in-person feedback and a written evaluation at the end of the rotation. Their evaluations will be based on: professionalism, scholarship, patient care, medical knowledge, interpersonal and communication skills, practice-based learning and system based practice.
