Course Description
The student will become familiar with the basic elements of diagnosis and treatment of allergic and immunologic disorders in children and adults. The spectrum of allergic diseases includes asthma, allergic rhinitis, atopic dermatitis, angioedema, urticaria, and food, drug, and insect allergy. Clinical immunology encompasses the broad area of congenital immunodeficiencies as well as a variety of autoimmune disorders. There are six scheduled allergy clinics per week, two adult and four pediatric, and two immunology clinics, one adult and one pediatric. The student may be asked to participate in consultations and the care of hospitalized patients on the allergy/immunology service. In addition, there are two weekly clinical conferences scheduled, one in allergy and one in immunology. The student will be assigned readings to assist in the learning experience. A basic or clinical research project may be performed, but two months elective are required.
