Course Description This course provides an opportunity for students to participate in the medical and surgical care of acutely ill and injured children presenting to the emergency department of The Children's Hospital of Alabama. Under the close supervision of pediatric emergency medicine faculty and fellows, the student will perform the primary assessment of the child and formulate a plan. In this way, they will learn the various methods of approaching the sick and injured child and their families. If a procedure is required, they will perform it under the supervision of the attending/fellow. Students will be expected to repair simple lacerations, manage uncomplicated fractures, and see a wide variety of medical complaints. They will be allowed to observe the management of trauma activations and medical code situations.
Where To Report Children's Hospital Emergency Room.
Please contact the course director about when and where to meet prior to starting your rotation.
Requirements The student must complete 40 clinical hours a week (between the hours of 7am and midnight) as well as 8 educational hours.
Evaluation The student will be given a grade of pass or fail with commentary. These evaluations will be done as a result of collective discussion of pediatric emergency medicine faculty and fellows.
