Biographical Sketch 
Fernando Ovalle, MD, FACE, is Professor of Medicine at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. He is the Director of the Diabetes & Endocrine Clinical Research Unit, Director of the Fellowship Training Program for the Division of Diabetes, Endocrinology, and Metabolism at UAB, and Director of the Multidisciplinary Comprehensive Diabetes Clinic at TKC. In addition, he is Medical Director for the Diabetes and Glycemic Control Programs at UAB Hospital.

He is a Fellow of the American College of Endocrinology (FACE), and an active member of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE) where he has served in multiple national committees and is Past-President of the Southern States Chapter of the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE). He is also an active member of the Southern Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Ovalle has published extensively in the area of diabetes, and serves as a member of the editorial board of the American Journal of the Medical Sciences, and is currently the U.S. Editor-in-Chief for the journal Diabetes Therapy.

• The pathophysiology and mechanisms of insulin resistance and related disorders, including type 2 diabetes, lipodystrophies, and related metabolic syndromes. • The epidemiology and classification of the different sub-types of diabetes mellitus, including Latent Autoimmune Diabetes of the Adult, Type 1b Diabetes, Monogenic Diabetes, and others. • The distinctive pathophysiology and treatment of diabetes in different races and gender • The pharmacologic treatment of diabetes mellitus, including the treatment of diabetes in difficult conditions; e.g. in subjects with liver and/or renal disease • The scientific testing of widely held, but unchallenged, dogmas in diabetes clinical practice. • The epidemiology, etiology, pathophysiology, and management of patients with diabetes and very high insulin requirements.
