Biographical Sketch
Dr. Pollard graduated from Duke University in 1983, 1985 and 1988 with the BS, MS and PhD degrees in Biomedical Engineering. He was a postdoctoral research associate and Research Assistant Professor at the Nora Eccles Harrison Cardiovascular Research and Training Institute (1989-1992) and an Assistant Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Tulane University (1992-1996) before joining the Biomedical Engineering Faculty at UAB. He was the recipient of a National Young Investigator Award from the National Science Foundation and FIRST award from the National Institutes of Health.
Research/Clinical Interest
Title
Microscopic electrical mapping mathematical modeling
Description
The focus of research in Dr. Pollard's laboratory is on sampling of electrical potential distributions from microscopic regions of intact heart preparations. Sampling with ultrafine resolution allows assessment of the role of microstructural alterations on conduction failure, which is a key component of arrhythmia formation. Experimental studies are tightly coupled with computer modeling approaches in which the system of ionic currents that flow across cell membrane are integrated into three-dimensional grids that incorporate histologic detail.
