Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Peter Glaeser is Professor of Pediatrics, Division Director and C. Phillip McWane Endowed Chair in Pediatric Emergency Medicine, and Vice-Chair of Clinical Services in the Department of Pediatrics (2008) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) School of Medicine. He received a Bachelor of Science Degree from Marquette University (1976) and his Medical Degree (1981) and pediatric training from the Medical College of Wisconsin (1984). He continued as an academic faculty in the Department of Pediatrics at MCW and practiced PEM at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin for 12 years prior to coming to Birmingham/UAB in 1996. Dr. Glaeser is board certified in both Pediatrics and Pediatric Emergency Medicine (PEM). His primary academic interest has been the out-of-hospital care of ill and injured children (EMS). In addition to published manuscripts he has served on and chaired numerous national EMS committees and has contributed to the nationally standardized pediatric curricula used to educate EMS providers. He served (1989-1998) as an AAP appointed member and then Chair of the Joint Review Committee (now the Committee on Accreditation) which is the national accrediting organization for EMS (paramedic) training programs and currently is the Past Chair of the Board of National Registry of Emergency Medical Technicians (NREMT) (1998-present). The NREMT creates the national certification examinations (psychomotor and cognitive) for EMS providers (First Responder, EMT, Advanced EMT, and Paramedic). Dr. Glaeser has held many other leadership positions and committee appointments some of which include: Elected President of the Medical Staff of Children’s Health System, Chair of the Medical Executive Committee, Past Chair and Member of the Children’s Hospital (COA) Clinical Outcomes Committee (peer review), Chair of the COA Credentialing Committee, member of the COA Executive Information Technology Council, member of the COA Quality Improvement Council, and UAB SOM Dean appointed member of the UAB Risk Management Liability Trust Fund Committee (2003-present) as well as the COA equivalent committee, the EQICC. As Vice Chair of Clinical Services, Dr. Glaeser leads strategic planning for the DOP. He served as interim Director of the Nephrology Division (2010) and recruited a new Division Director (DD) along with an additional junior faculty member. He reorganized and combined the general inpatient “ward” (resident) and hospitalist services and recruited a DD for the newly created division of Pediatric Hospital Medicine. As Division Director of PEM, Dr. Glaeser successfully lobbied for and negotiated a contract with COA (1998-present) that provides the financial support that has allowed him to build a division of 20 faculty and 9 fellows. In 2010 he became the first recipient of the C. Phillip McWane Endowed Chair in Pediatric Emergency Medicine.
