Biographical Sketch 
Since his arrival at UAB in 2005, Dr. Michael John Hanaway, M.D. has been a member of the abdominal transplantation team. His clinical focus is kidney and pancreas transplantation, vascular access surgery for hemodialysis and laparoscopic donor nephrectomy. He was the first transplant surgeon at UAB to perform laparoscopic donor nephrectomy for live kidney donors. As Surgical Director of the Renal Transplant Program, Dr. Hanaway is responsible for overseeing all aspects of the program. His greatest focus is live kidney donation and pre-transplant evaluation. He is involved in UABís General Operation Committee and the newly formed Comprehensive Transplant Institute Operations Committee. Dr. Hanaway has also been involved on a national level with the primary transplant organization, the United Network of Organ Sharing (UNOS). This organization is responsible for the implementation of a nationwide distribution of organs. His research activities focus primarily on the natural history and behavior of cancer in transplant patients and induction immunosuppression and its effects on the immunologic response after renal transplantation. He has received multiple grants in the past and lists over 67 manuscripts in peer-reviewed journals. He is a reviewer for several top tier journals including the American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation, and American Journal of Surgery. He is a frequent presenter at national and regional meetings. His initiative and investigative efforts, particularly his innovative approaches to immunosuppression have been instrumental in changing the immunosuppressive protocols for renal transplantation at UAB. Dr. Hanaway was the Primary Investigator on a Phase IV randomized open labeled, comparative multi-center study to assess the safety and efficacy of induction agents.

Major research interests include the natural history and behavior of cancer in transplant patients and novel approaches to immunosuppression. Previous experience with the Israel Penn Transplant Tumor Registry has led to interest in clarifying the risks of malignancy in transplant patients.
