Prerequisites * * * WRITTEN APPROVAL REQUIRED * * * Must have completed Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Surgery Clerkships prior to taking this course. Must have prior approval from Dr. Salser, the Director of the Division of Medical Student Education in the UAB Department of Family and Community Medicine.

Course Description This is a 2 or 4 week elective. Students will have the opportunity to experience medicine in an international underserved population setting. Students will travel with a UAB approved board-certified physician to an international medical training site and have the opportunity to manage acute and chronic illnesses and practice their medical decision making. The students will also engage in meeting the social and spiritual needs of the community. LEARNING OBJECTIVES: Help students develop confidence and further their skills in history taking, physical exam, differential diagnosis and treatment decision making; develop skill in assessing emotional and spiritual needs of patients and addressing them appropriately.

Requirements Student will be responsible for cost of travel and housing. The student will provide patient care daily.
Evaluation Pass/Fail based on direct observation, history taking, physical exam skills, decision making skills manner relating to patients, and reaction to stresses of foreign culture.
