Course Description Hospice and the Dept of Family & Community Medicine have designed this course for students to spend 2 or 4 weeks rotating with a hospice physician on house calls and office practice. The student will attend interdisciplinary team meetings. They will attend to terminally ill patients with issues including, but not limited to: terminal cancer, ALS, wound care, CHF, diverse dermatopathology, terminal dementias, end-of-life consultations, diverse neurological conditions, COPD, and pulmonary fibrosis. Students will become very familiar with: - Pain control and the various medications and techniques - Common hospice and palliative care situations, a spectrum of care that encompasses nursing, social work, etc. - Enhancement of interview techniques - Learning of advanced physical diagnosis.

Requirements Students will be required to make patient house calls, formulate plans of care, perform nursing home visits, hospital consultations, coordinate health care providers, and perform bereavement work. Students will have the option to spend time with subspecialties and will have the opportunity to learn and perform common outpatient procedures. NO NIGHT OR WEEKEND CALL.
Evaluation Pass/Fail based on:
- Attendance
- H&P skills
- Ability to interact compassionately with end-of-life patients and their families
- Participation in team care (ie-social work, bereavement counseling, house calls, etc)
