Prerequisites Successful completion of the core internal medicine and sugery clerkships and any clerkship which covers material of the requested or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description The purpose of the Nephrology rotation is to expose the student to the variety of renal problems common to primary care and also to those more unique disorders seen on a subspecialty rotation. The student will learn how to develop a rational diagnostic and therapeutic approach to problems in Nephrology. Based on historical and examination data plus appropriate laboratory and imaging studies, the student will assist in formulating a comprehensive and thoughtful differential diagnosis. The student will learn to appreciate the appropriate indications for the use of therapeutic agents in the management of patients with renal disease and hypertension. Become knowledgeable of the indications for dialysis ? acute and chronic and familiar with the disorders and patient characteristics amenable to transplantation.

Evaluation At the completion of the rotation, the Attending Physician completes an End of Rotation form that is reviewed by the student. The results of this evaluation are used to give the students formative feedback regarding their educational experience. After review, it is returned to the Residency Office and placed in the student?s file.
