Course Description
In this elective the medical student will learn how to recognize the chemically dependent patient and how to facilitate recovery from the disease of addiction. The student will actively participate in all aspects of the 12 step recovery process, which will increase awareness of how treatment works. The goal of this elective is to provide the medical student with an understanding of the prevalence, presentation, diagnosis, management, and natural history of addictive disorders. The student will learn to integrate substance abuse training with their other clinical experiences. The elective will include didactic, clinical, and experiental sessions provided at the Addiction Recovery Program(ARP). The student will function as a member of the ARP team. As the team is multidisciplined, the student will be exposed to multiple treatment modalities. The rotation is flexible enough to allow the trainee to explore a special interest in a addictive disorder or treatment modality. Special areas of interest include: the addicted healthcare professional, 12 step programs, opiate addiction in chronic pain, comorbid addiction in chronic illnesses, and dysfunctional family dynamics.
