Course Description
The student will participate as an integral member of the Hematology Consult Service providing consultation to in-patients in both the VA and University Hospital. This patient material covers a broad spectrum of hematology including anemia, white cell disorders, platelet disorders, coagulation, and hematologic malignancies. The student will round daily with the hematology attending, fellow and resident and provide a primary evaluation of patients to be subsequently reviewed by attending staff. He/she will learn to perform bone marrow aspirate and biopsy procedures and become experienced at the evaluation of both peripheral blood and bone marrow smears and slides. He/she will attend several regular weekly conferences including Hematology/Oncology Grand Rounds, Hemato-pathology Conference and Inter-disciplinary Tumor Conference.
