Course Description Students will be assigned to work with faculty during the rotation in a fast-paced family medicine outpatient clinic at Maxwell AFB. Visit types include acute illness and injury, travel medicine, MSK medicine, chronic disease management, and outpatient procedures. Students will work with family physicians assigned to operational military units for 2 of 4 weeks gaining experience in the clinical, administrative, and leadership skills required of a medical officer. Students will have the opportunity to see a wide variety of patient problems and develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans prior to presentation to the attending, who reviews the history and examination and approves the final plans. Students will have one faculty member as primary supervisor but will be allowed to work with other faculty. While especially suited to those interested in careers as military physicians, any student meeting prerequisites can participate.
Where To Report Maxwell AFB, Visitor, 7:30 AM.
Requirements Attendance at clinic from 7am-5pm Monday- Friday as well as occasional educational conferences as determined by the supervising faculty. As an AI students will be expected to see, present, and document a minimum of 8 patients per day as they would during the first few months of intern year.
Evaluation Students will be assessed on their ability to meet course objectives (i.e. to independently set the agenda, assess the patient, develop a differential diagnosis and reasonable plan of care.) They will see and document 4 patients per half day by the end of the rotation. The student will be evaluated by faculty who have had contact with the student. The grade will be pass or fail, but will include descriptions of strengths, weaknesses, and areas for improvement.
