Course Description |
Students will have a one-week experience in forensic pathology at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (ADFS) Regional Laboratory which performs medicolegal death investigation in Montgomery, AL. The student works with and is supervised by a ADFS board-certified forensic pathologist/medical examiner. The experience includes observing medicolegal autopsies. |

Requirements |
Students will be required to shadow a board-certified forensic pathologist/medical examiner over the course of a week. Students will read and discuss with the preceptor how reasons for death and causes of death are determined and stated, and how to complete a death certificate. |
Evaluation |
Course director will talk with community preceptor (forensic pathologist) to ensure the student was an active participant over the course of the week, and that they did attend to at least one medicolegal autopsy. Student must have demonstrated to the satisfaction of the preceptor how to determine and explain reasons for and causes of death. Student must have observed the completion of at least one death certificate. |

Students will be placed at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences (ADFS) Medical Morgue facilities in Montgomery, AL where they will be exposed to the field of Forensic Pathology. They will have an opportunity to view and participate In post mortem examinations while assisting ADFS State Medical Examiners as they determine cause and manner of death in pending Death Investigations submitted to ADFS from throughout Alabama. |
