Course Description
University Medical Center in Tuscaloosa, Pickens County Primary Care office, Alabama Multi-Specialty Group office, community based field trips. The purpose of this course is to integrate topics of physician leadership development, population health, active service learning, reflection, and academic discussion in order to foster medical student empathy, leadership, cultural competency, and community medicine skills. This course is designed to integrate participatory experiences in clinical and community settings allowing students to identify the various functions physician leaders perform. Students will envision their potential roles and gain competencies as a future physician leader equipped to provide healthcare to populations and communities. Weekly learning sessions on population health, primary care leadership development, experiential engagement, and academic discussions will cover an array of topics in a seminar style. Students will be notified in advance of field trips and other forms of active learning that will take place outside of the usual classroom setting. Learning Objectives: Students will model the principles of community medicine and public health, determine the basic principles of culturally competent health care, recognize health care disparities and the importance of meeting the needs of medically underserved populations, develop core professional attributes, demonstrate basic skills in creating evidence based health promotion/disease prevention plans, achieve a basic understanding of the US health care system and assess ways a physician citizen can effect change, define attributes of a physician as a clinical and community leader and develop a personal plan for growth as such a leader, and develop an personal and system awareness of patient empathy.

Requirements
Participate in weekly scheduled LEAD activities including assigned readings and multimedia coursework, class meetings, and community site visits. Students are also expected to participate in the Annual CCHS research day and attend the annual UA Rural Health Conference. Students are expected to perform any readings or academic development assigned to be completed outside of the LEAD classroom time. Participation will be documented by attendance. Reflection Assignment submission will be recorded.
Evaluation
LEAD is a Pass/Fail elective course. Students are expected to attend at least 80% of the learning sessions and submit 80% of the reflection assignments in order to pass the course.
