Course Description The student will assist and observe the physicians in performing various ophthalmologic surgeries and receive clinical experience in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with various types of ophthalmologic diseases. The student will accompany the attending on hospital rounds and will observe or assist with ophthalmologic surgery. The student will observe and participate in the examination and treatment of patients in the outpatient clinic. The student will receive instruction in the basic techniques of ophthalmologic examinations, including ophthalmoscopy, tonometry, and the slit-lamp corneal microscope. On completion of the rotation, the student should be proficient in conducting a basic ophthalmoscopic examination. The student will also be familiarized with the office management of common problems such as infections, foreign bodies, and trauma of eye.

Evaluation Pass/Fail. The evaluation will be based upon the attending physician’s observations of the student’s performance, thought process and interest level. Students will be judged on knowledge, attitude, ability, level of documentation, communication skills, level of progression, attendance and timeliness.
