Course Description
Students enrolled in this course will be taught how to do various procedures in the hospital, such as lumbar punctures, paracentesis, etc. Learning Objectives: 1.) Detail the major indications for performing the procedure; 2.) list major contraindications to the procedure; 3.) describe the procedure adequately to the patient in order to properly obtain a written informed consent; 4.) identify the relevant anatomy for the procedure, including proper patient positioning; 5.) perform the steps involved in a pre-procedure time-out; 6.) demonstrate sterile procedure, including donning protective gear; 7.) exhibit proper use of ultrasound as a gu8ide to identify relevant anatomical targets; 8.) obtain technical skills required to perform the procedure confidentially and competently; and 9.) recognize and satisfactorily address potential complications of the procedure. Due to mandatory simulation training for this course, we ask that students add this course a minimum of 2 weeks prior to the start date. Please e-mail the course director at emilymai@uabmc.edu if you are unsure if there is enough time to add the course. If a student signs up for the course but there is insufficient time to arrange a simulation session, enrollment in the course may need to be cancelled.
