Prerequisites
* * * WRITTEN APPROVAL REQUIRED * * * A description of the project, detailing the study and what the student wishes to accomplish during the elective must be submitted. This should include an overview of the background, the methods that will be employed, and the expected outcomes and analytic methods that will be used. Specific details of the student role in the proposed project should be outlined. This should be no longer than 2-pages. The Physician Scientist Research Elective Application Form must accompany this description and both have to be received 6-weeks prior to the start date. Completed forms should be sent to the Coursemaster for approval.

Course Description
To register for this course, approval must be received from the Associate Dean for Physician Scientist Development and the coursemaster. Learning Objectives: The student should learn the knowledge to identify a suitable biomedical research questions, formulate a hypothesis, design a suitable experimental procedure, obtain data, and properly analyze it.

Requirements
Course Director Approval, Research Mentor assigned reading, appropriate research seminars, attend research work-in-progress meetings, and full-time research (40 hours/week).
Evaluation
Pass/Fail; During the final week of the course, the student should submit a narrative of the research activities to the coursemaster. This should provide details of the project and a summary of the results. This should also include any plans for submission of abstracts or manuscript. A template will be provided. The mentor will also be required to submit an evaluation of the student’s participation and progress of the project.
