Course Description This course will provide the student an opportunity to gain experience caring for older adults in a variety of healthcare settings including an outpatient geriatric clinic, nursing home and hospice. The student will work directly with attending physicians and residents evaluating and treating older patients with common chronic diseases. Learning Objectives: Students will gain competency in evaluationg geriatric patients and formulating a management plan; will demonstrate compassion and sensitivity in the care of patients and respect their privacy and dignity; will practice and furhter develop communication skills with patients, caregivers and the interprofessional team that cares for geriatric patients; will be exposed to and examine the complex decision making, transitions of care and cultural aspects of aging.

Requirements Students are required to participate in: outpatient geriatric clinics; nursing home and hospice visits; residency academic afternoon conferences; one hospice management meeting with the hospice medical director; and inter-professional ridealongs to hospice patients.
Evaluation Pass/Fail. Direct observation of participation in clinic and other required activities; attendance at academic afternoon sessions.
