Course Description The Rural Medicine Acting Internship is designed to foster clinical competencies within the framework of the rural family physician's approach to medicine, one that emphasizes the provision of continuous comprehensive and coordinated care for a broad spectrum of patients in the rural ambulatory setting. It will examine wellness, preventive medicine and the social determinants of health in an effort to teach the needs and complexities of rural Alabama. This rotation will consist of 4 weeks of patient care (both outpatient and inpatient, if applicable) with a family physician at a site designated by the course director. The learner may pick the site and physician providing the physician is a credentialed faculty member of the UAB School of Medicine.
Where To Report UAB Huntsville Family Medicine Department
Requirements The student is expected to keep a log of the various diseases and conditions encountered. Participation in all patient care activities dictated by the preceptor is required including call duties. The student will be required to write a short (2-3 page) descriptive paper describing the economy and demographics of the town, its health care resources and hospital services offered (if any), the medical workforce available to the area, referral patterns, and elder care facilities. The learner is also expected to make a 10-15-minute case presentation of a problem encountered during the rotation accompanied by an appropriate article from the medical literature.
Evaluation A pass/fail grade will be awarded based upon the evaluation by the rural preceptor, the case presentation and the descriptive paper.
Notes Students who choose this rotation as their Ambulatory AI should contact Dr. John Irle and Linda Whitt (lindawhitt@uabmc.edu) at least 4 weeks prior to the beginning of the course to coordinate the location and choice of preceptor.
