Course Description This course will provide the student an opportunity to gain experience caring for older adults in a variety of healthcare settings. This will include spending time in outpatient general and specialty geriatrics clinics, the nursing home, going on home visits and learning to conduct comprehensive geriatric assessments. The student will work directly with attending physicians (geriatricians) evaluating and treating older patients with common chronic diseases, such as heart failure, dementia and diabetes, and with geriatric syndromes like delirium, incontinence and falls. The student will interview and examine older patients and learn to perform a variety of geriatric screens to test for cognition and depression. Each week, students will participate in the Geriatrics division noon conferences and complete self-guided assignments. Educational materials specific to the complex care of the older adult will be provided through a geriatric website.
