Course Description Surgical Gynecology is a 2 or 4 week elective designed especially for 4th year medical students who plan to pursue postgraduate training in either Obstetrics or General Surgery. The student operates with all the GYN and General and Subspecialty Surgery Staff at DCH Regional Medical Center. He/she scrubs with the medical school Faculty 7-12 a.m. on Mondays and Fridays and other times during the week as needed. Every day from 12 noon until 2 p.m. and on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings he/she scrubs with the clinical GYN Faculty that have cases in both the main and outpatient operating rooms. Between 9 a.m. and 12 noon on Tuesdays through Thursdays and every afternoon after 2 p.m. he operates with the General and Subspecialty Surgeons that do not have medical students on their service. When not in surgery the student will attend the didactive sessions and especially the procedures lectures which include knot-typing and surgical sewing. There is no night or weekend call. There are no clinics. The entire elective is inpatient care. GOALS AND OBJECTIVES 1. Expand surgical skills learned in 3rd year to prepare for residency 2. Further acquaint the the medical student planning a general surgery residency with the pelvis and gynecologic procedures. 3.
