Prerequisites
Successful completion of the core internal medicine and surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description
The goal is to provide the student with further experience in the decision making process in patients who are acutely or chronically ill with diseases or injuries to which surgery can make a therapeutic contribution. The student will acquire a reliable database from history, physical examination, and selected laboratory procedures and will assist in the pre-operative diagnosis, operative procedures, and post-operative care of all patients on the service.

Requirements
The student will keep a log of the patients evaluated and followed during their eight
service. Students will participate in daily ward rounds, attend procedures performed in the operating.
Student will required to see an open-heart surgery, see/do chest tube, foley on male and female, and a chest tube. A DXR case is also required.

Evaluation
Evaluation Methods: Pass/Fail
Students will be evaluated on attendance, completion of assigned reading and participation in patient interactions and group discussions.
