Course Description
This elective allows UASOM and visiting medical students to experience Community Medicine and medical practice in communities. On a case by case basis, students may be assigned to community preceptors or institutions for observing and experiencing medical practice, for completing service learning projects, or conducting research projects. Each student will be assigned also to a supervisor who is a faculty member of, or preceptor for, the Department of Family, Internal and Rural Medicine. The student will keep a log of experiences and make weekly reports to the supervisor. A final paper is rquired to document what the student expected, what the student experienced, what the student learned, and what the student recommends to other students and to the faculty. Pre-clinical students have enjoyed opportunity to shadow rural physicians. Students with elective time early in the third year of medical school have been introduced to primary care medicince. Students in the fourth year have experienced rural community exposures to Family Medicine, Obstetrics, Internal Medicine, Sports Medicine, Pediatrics, Surgery, Cardiology, and Radiology. The elective seeks to address the individual needs of students. Students should contact Dr. Wheat at least two months in advance of the anticipated elective in order to make arrangements. This elective can emphasize rural community experience.
