Prerequisites
Successful completion of the core internal medicine, pediatric and surgery clerkships and any clerkship which covers the content material of the requested elective or acting internship course (e.g. Pediatric Clerkship must be successfully completed prior to taking a Pediatric Elective or AI).

Course Description
The Division of Pediatric Surgery strives to provide the senior student an extensive exposure to major surgical problems in infants and children. The student will function as a vital personnel on the pediatric surgery team by participating in the clinic, operating room, and on rounds. The student will evaluate and discuss common problems in pediatric surgery. The student will be able to describe basic operative procedures in pediatric surgery including but not limited to: pyloric stenosis, appendicitis, hernias, congenital abnormalities, trauma evaluation and resuscitation, and common childhood solid tumors. The student will learn techniques in common intern-level duties including nasogastric tube insertion, obtaining IV access, placement of urinary catheter, removal of drains, management of gastrostomy tubes, and basic suturing. The student will gain an appreciation for a career in pediatric surgery and academic surgery.
