Biographical Sketch
Jianming ‘James’ Tang (b. 1965) grew up in Hunan Province, China. He studied veterinary medicine at Beijing (China) Agricultural University (1981-1986) before pursuing a PhD degree at The University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia (1988-1993). After post-doctoral training at the Marine Biological Laboratory (Woods Hole, MA) and at UAB Division of Geographic Medicine, he was appointed as assistant professor in 1996 and promoted to associate professor and full professor in 2004 and 2012, respectively. As documented in over 100 peer-reviewed articles in two dozen scientific journals, Dr. Tang's research has evolved from parasite immunology and molecular entomology to immunogenetics and pharmacogenetics. His current work focuses on genetic and epigenetic contributions to infection and immunity in human populations. Two ongoing projects are funded by NIH (NIAID and NIA).
