Biographical Sketch 
Dennis Boulware, M.D., joined the Administrative Staff of the School of Medicine in 1995 to serve as Associate Dean for Education. In this role Dr. Boulware is responsible for ensuring the delivery of high quality, innovative, and cost effective undergraduate medical education that prepares students for primary care and specialty residency programs. In 1999, his responsibilities were modified to include oversight of the institutional graduate medical education training programs. In 2002, he was appointed as Senior Associate Dean for Medical Education. Boulware received his undergraduate degree with high honors in 1974 from Oregon State University. He received his M.D. from the John A. Burns School of Medicine at the University of Hawaii in 1978 and completed internal medicine residenc training at Tulane University. He became a member of the faculty at Tulane in 1983 after completing a fellowship at the University of Washington in Seattle and received on numerous occasions teaching awards for outstanding service during his tenure at Tulane. Dr. Boulware was recruited to the University of Alabama at Birmingham in the Department of Medicine, Division of Clinical Immunology and Rheumatology in 1992 as Professor and was appointed Director of Professional Education and Postgraduate Training Program in the division. Boulware is active in several national societies such as the American College of Physicians, the American College of Rheumatology, the Alliance for Academic Internal Medicine and the Alabama Society for Rheumatic Diseases. He is currently Past-President of the Association of Subspecialty Professors, a post that will end in June 2004. He is currently serving as a consultant to the Food and Drug Administration's Gastroenterology and Urology Devices Panel of the Center for Devices and Radiological Health and the Arthritis Drugs Advisory Committee within the Center for Drug Evaluation and Research . His contributions to organizations include membership to the Board of Directors of the American College of Rheumatology Research and Education Foundation, the Accreditation Appeal Committee-Rheumatology of the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education, the Board of Directors of the Jefferson County Medical Society, the Jefferson County Board of Health and he also holds a position on the Southern Medical Journal editorial board. Dr. Boulware has been married to his wife Diane Boulware for over 25 years, and they have 3 children.
