Biographical Sketch 
Bruce A. Julian, MD is Professor Emeritus of Medicine in the Division of Nephrology with secondary appointments in the Departments of Surgery and Microbiology. He graduated from Wabash College and received his MD degree from Washington University in St. Louis, MO. His clinical training in internal medicine and nephrology was completed at the University of Kentucky, Lexington. After four years in private practice in Lexington, KY, he joined the faculty at UAB in 1984.

Research/Clinical Interest
Title
IgA nephropathy, recurrent disease in renal allografts, erythropoiesis after renal transplantation
Description
Dr. Julian's primary research interest is IgA nephropathy. The studies investigate the clinical expression and natural history of the disease, identification of the gene in multiplex families, and recurrence after kidney transplantation. He also collaborates with Drs. Jiri Mestecky, Jan Novak Zina Moldoveanu and colleagues in the Department of Microbiology and Dr. Matthew Refrow in the Department of Biochemistry at UAB, Dr. Robert J. Wyatt at the University of Tennessee in Memphis, and Drs. Ali Gharavi and Krzysztof Kiryluk at Columbia University in projects to clarify the nephritogenic nature of galactose-deficient IgA1 in patients with IgA nephropathy and Henoch-Schoenlein purpura nephritis. Other areas of interest include post-transplant erythrocytosis, and the role suppression of angiotensin II, by angiotensin converting enzyme inhibitors or angiotensin receptor type 1 blockers, in its treatment.
