Research/Clinical Interest
Title
Pathogenesis of maternal and congenital CMV infections
Description
Dr. Boppana has been studying the natural history and pathogenesis of maternal and congenital human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) infection for the past 20 years. His research interests include the definition of the mechanisms of intrauterine transmission of CMV, pathogenesis of congenital CMV infection, understanding the CMV strain diversity and reinfections and the consequences of such reinfections in relation to fetal outcome. His work challenged the dogma that children with congenital CMV infection born to women with primary CMV infection during pregnancy experience most of the disease burden from this intrauterine infection. His research in collaboration with Dr. William Britt has documented the impact of congenital CMV infection in highly seropositive settings including developing countries. He has shown that CMV reinfections occur frequently in healthy seropositive women and such reinfections could lead to intrauterine infection, symptomatic disease and sequelae.
