Biographical Sketch 
Dr. Faye-Petersen is an internationally recognized perinatal pathologist, author, and lecturer. She is the Immediate Past President of the Society for Pediatric Pathology (2016) and is the North American Councilor for the International Pediatric Pathology Association (2015-2018), the educational organization for specialty training in pediatric pathology in countries outside the US. She received her undergraduate (biology, chemistry, and philosophy) and medical degrees from the University of Colorado. She completed residency training at the Denver Presbyterian Hospital in Denver, CO, and later completed postdoctoral training in Surgical Pathology at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center and pediatric pathology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York City, NY. Since 1996, she has been cited in the annual publications of "Best Doctors in America." In February 2002, she was received the Society for Pediatric Pathology’s (SPP's) Distinguished Colleague Award. In March 2007, she was named the Outstanding Woman UAB Faculty Member for her academic, teaching, research, and community service contributions. In March 2011, Dr. Faye-Petersen was awarded the President's Scroll of Appreciation for her outstanding service to the SPP's educational efforts. Long committed to multidisciplinary education, Dr. Faye-Petersen has received numerous UAB School of Medicine teaching awards, and, in 2010, was one of two UAB School of Medicine faculty inducted into Alpha Omega Alpha National Honor Society. Finally, she was instrumental in starting, and continues to remain active in, the UAB Commission for the Status of Women's annual community clothing drive, "Suits for Success." This drive is the major contributor to the YWCA of North Central Alabama's resource, "My Sister's Closet," for interviewing and work attire, for economically disadvantaged women. This UAB drive results in the annual collection at least two tons of such clothing and accessories from UAB donors and the surrounding regional communities; April 2016 marks the 10th Annual UAB S4S drive.

Perinatal and Placental Pathology
Description
Dr. Faye-Petersen's service responsibilities and areas of research activities are largely focused on perinatal and placental pathology. Through the combined support of the Department of Pathology and UAB Hospital, in 1995, she established a diagnostic regional referral service laboratory for embryo-fetal and placental pathology, the UAB Microdissectional Laboratory (MDL). From 7/1995 through 1/2009, the MDL provided in-depth multidisciplinary evaluations of conceptus specimens delivered from women with histories of recurrent, spontaneous abortion; fetuses and placentas from pregnancies with antenatally documented or suspected abnormalities and genetic syndromes; cases of intrauterine fetal demise; and placentas from stillborn or live born infants whose gestations were complicated by maternal disease or other adverse factors. In 2/2009, the outreach autopsy aspect of the MDL was discontinued, due to financial constraints. However, in late 2009, the need for such evaluations was addressed through its addition the outreach services of the UAB Autopsy Service, where Dr Faye-Petersen continues to perform postmortem examinations of stillborns and cases of infant death. MDL placental evaluations have continued to provide UAB and community obstetricians with pathologic correlations for prenatal clinical and ultrasonographic diagnoses, and have helped to answer questions concerning the causes of pregnancy loss, fetal growth restriction and maldevelopment, and neonatal complications. The MDL examinations also provide information essential for meaningful medical genetics counseling, grief counseling for patients and their families, and clinicopathologic correlations useful to future care of obstetrical and infant patients. MDL and UAB Autopsy Pathology Service work has enabled Dr Faye-Petersen to participate in several NIH-funded clinical research studies and collaborative studies with other placental pathologists to elucidate which placental pathologic findings may correlate with increased risks for perinatal morbidity and mortality, or underlying maternal disorders. Recent collaborations include investigation of the transplacental passage of cytomegalovirus infection, the placental microbiome in normal and abnormal gestations,and epigenetic factors involved in development of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. In addition to her role as UAB's perinatal pathologist, Dr. Faye-Petersen is also the primary autopsy pathologist for cases complicated by congenital cardiovascular malformations. In 1997, she, with aid of two colleagues, completed a re-examination and registry of UAB's cases of congenital heart disease. As primary investigator of this aspect of the UAB Congenital Heart Disease Program (CHDP), she established a formal, centralized site for the ongoing collection of formalin-fixed specimens with congenital heart malformations (some 650 to date) to support multidisciplinary education and research in the pathology and pathogenesis of cardiovascular malformations.
