Biographical Sketch
Dr. Tiago Colicchio earned his PhD in Biomedical Informatics from the University of Utah. He earned his MBA at the University of São Paulo, Brazil, and his MS in Information Systems at Grenoble Alpes University, France. He is Assistant Professor of Medicine at the UAB Department of Medicine. Dr. Colicchio is a project management professional (PMP) certified by the project management institute (PMI) with extensive experience in health information technology (health IT) adoption. Prior to joining UAB, he held leadership positions at a large health care delivery system in Brazil, where he led a team of software engineers and clinical informaticians responsible for the design, test, and implementation of a homegrown electronic health record (EHR) system, and for the implementation of a commercial EHR system in multiple inpatient and outpatient settings. He has served as project manager for large EHR implementations leading clinical and non-clinical teams in both U.S. and non-U.S. organizations. While studying full-time at the University of Utah, he was admitted to the research internship program at the Homer Warner Center for Informatics Research at Intermountain Healthcare, where he conducted his PhD research project. His expertise in the design and adoption of EHR systems contributed to his interest in developing a scientific methodology for detecting longitudinal change patterns on clinical and non-clinical outcomes introduced by EHR implementations, in order to increase the understanding of the impact of health IT on health care outcomes. Such a method is presented in his dissertation “Toward a Better Understanding of the Impact of Information Technology Interventions in Health Care."

Research/Clinical Interest
Title
Health IT Adoption, Clinical Documentation Systems, EHR Design
Description
Dr. Colicchio's research interests involve the design of electronic clinical documentation systems that can increase clinicians’ situational awareness, improve the medical-decision making process, and reduce the EHR-associated documentation burden.
